There are plenty of families enjoying junior soccer in Singleton but it is the committee that ensures the players get on the field.
With Singleton Junior Soccer Club preparing for its annual general meeting, current president Mark Watson is encouraging others to put their hand up and get involved.
“Next year is going to be huge for the club, a $6.5million upgrade to the fields and facilities will be undertaken in 2024 and it will mean our junior games will be played elsewhere, not sure where yet so there is a lot to be organised,” Mark told The Hunter River Times.
All this at a time when the sport is growing in popularity.
The year Singleton Juniors have ten under six teams and eight under sevens putting some 120 girls and boys on Alroy Oval every Saturday morning.
“One of the things we do a little differently than other junior clubs around the region is we have all our under 6s and 7s play games against each other at Alroy, there is no travelling, which is very appealing to parents and the kids,” Mark said.
“The rules are simple and the kids have a lot of fun.”
One of the challenges facing the sport is the drop in registrations in older age groups.
“We have no 15s, 16s, 17s or 18s this year, we lose kids to other sporting codes, some get jobs that sort of thing so these are things we need to address,” Mark said.
Anyone wanting to learn more about the committee commitment is welcome to connect with the club via an email through their website.
Singleton Junior Soccer annual general meeting is on August 14, at 6:30pm at Club Singleton.
