Andrew Set for International Championships

SHARE THE STORY:

Singleton clay target shooter Andrew Garvie got an unexpected phone call last week inviting him to represent Australia at the Compac World Championships in Canada and France in August.

He seized the opportunity saying it was unexpected given he did not shoot his best at the National Titles in Wagga in November.

“I ended up finishing in fourth place at Nationals in the senior mens division which meant I was first reserve but I wasn’t expecting the call,” Andrew said.

Andrew will compete in Canada early August and France later that month and will obviously be up against the best competitors in the world but he has high hopes for the Australian teams.

“Some of the guys are world ranked shooters so who knows, I am going to have fun and hopefully shoot well,” Andrew told The Hunter River Times.

Australia will be sending teams in the open, seniors (55 to 65), vets (65 to 72), ladies and junior divisions.

Andrew has competed in Canada and New Zealand previously but this will be his first time competing in France.

While his trusted 12 gauge shotgun will be travelling on board, Andrew won’t be taking any ammunition although some competitors do.

“I would have to take five kilograms of ammunition, which is a third of my on board luggage so I won’t be taking that,” he laughed.

Meanwhile New South Wales will hold their State Carnival at the Clay Target Venue at Warkworth, near Singleton, on March 29 and 30 which will be a great lead-up to the World Championships for Andrew.

Andrew hasn’t shared the news with his greatest fan, mum Carol Garvie, and thought she might like to learn about his latest achievement in The Hunter River Times.   Surprise Carol!
