It’s been 10 years since the Singleton Rugby Bulls have won a grand final and when they hit the No2 Sportsground in Newcastle on Saturday, they are determined to break that drought.
After finishing third in the season regular, the Bulls (Red) eliminated minor premiers Nelson Bay in the major semi-finals to head straight into Saturday’s grand final. Up against Cooks Hill Brown Snakes, the Bulls are in solid form and ready for everything the match promises to be.
It is the second year the Bulls have fielded teams in the suburban structure, a transition from Premier 1 rugby after work commitments restricted the club’s capacity to field three teams consistently.
The decision to cut back to two teams delegating the Bulls to the suburban competition has been a strategic decision that, with a slot in the 2024 grand final, one the club is happy to have made.
The major semi against Nelson Bay was a nail-bitter with the Bulls securing victory by just one point. Of note with this game is the Bulls Red went down in last year’s deciding game against Nelson Bay, this year wanting to go one better.
Nelson Bay then took on Cooks Hill in the semi-eliminator with the Brown Snakes getting a 12-7 win.
Singleton Rugby Club is pumped to say the least and coach Will Gresham and assistant coach Jackson Walsh are putting the finishing touches to the team at training on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
After training on Thursday there will be the grand final Calcutta draw.
Then it all comes down to Saturday when the Bulls will head to Newcastle for a game they hope will break that drought.
Kick-off is at 11:15am. The Old Boys are heading down by bus and there will be plenty of red and black in the crowd for what will be one hell of a game.
Go the Bulls!!!
