Communities Gather For National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day

Vigils marking National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day were held throughout the region on May 1.

More than 50 people gathered at Singleton’s Uniting Church for a candlelight service, organised by the Combined Churches of Singleton and joined by Upper Hunter service providers.

“This is the third time the candlelight vigil has been commemorated in the Upper Hunter and I think it shows, the fact that we had over 50 people attend, that we are a very caring community here in Singleton,” Di McDonald from the Combined Churches of Singleton shared.

“What struck me were the two ladies in their 90s who attended, which shows their concern for what’s happening in our nation today.”

As a part of the service, attendees were invited to light candles, acknowledging their care and concern for anyone affected by violence.

“Some people coming up to light a candle were tearful and obviously it’s connecting with them on a deeper level, in a way providing an opportunity for them to grieve for themselves or a loved one who has experienced or witness violence in the home,” Di said.

“We’re very grateful for those people who came out on a rainy night, and I think that shows the calibre of people that live in this community, we are a caring community and that shows.”
