Council Issue Richard Gill School Update

Council engaged an independent consultant to conduct a review of the establishment of the Richard Gill School.

The investigation, conducted over the last few months, was initiated in response to Council’s concerns about the sale of the Council land, provision of financial assistance to the school, and whether any conflicts of interest existed.

Council’s investigation has now concluded, however the Council remains concerned that the correct legal processes were not followed by a former Council in assisting with the establishment of the school.

Council therefore has referred the matter to the Office of Local Government, which is responsible for strengthening the performance, transparency, and accountability of the local government sector.

While Council has no evidence of corruption, Council has also referred the matter to the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). ICAC has broad investigative powers available to it if it decides to investigate the matter further.

These referrals will determine the next steps and what, if any action needs to be taken.

Council would like to make it clear that the events investigated predate the existing Council. This Council has taken, and will continue to take, steps to provide the transparency and clarity the community demands on this matter.

Council recognises that this has been a difficult time for staff, students, parents and families of the school and wants to reaffirm that these investigations are not a reflection on the school community.
