Muswellbrook Shire Council met with parents from The Richard Gill School community on Monday night following the School’s decisions to decline a request from Council to either:
· return the land and facilities that were gifted to the School by the community; or
· enter into an agreement to:
- uphold promises previously made to Council and the community; and
- to return the land and facilities to Council should the School not be successful and if the gift is not used for the purpose it was intended (which was primarily for the purpose of music and STEM education, drawing on the legacy of Richard Gill AO).
Given the merger between the School and Melos Education Group (a private religious education network), Council has also written to Melos Education Group asking that they also enter into an agreement to uphold the promises made by them and the School to the Council and the community. Melos Education Group has failed to respond to that request.
Council has engaged an independent law firm to conduct an investigation into the sale of the land.
Muswellbrook Shire Council will continue to provide updates to the community as the matter progresses.
