Dubs By The Lake

Meredith Hamson’s parents, Neil and Kay Buchanan, purchased their first V Dub new in 1962 and it was the foundation of a love affair that has spanned three generations.

“I think years ago when they had them, everyone had them, and they were an affordable family car,” Meredith said.

“Over the years nostalgia creeps in, that’s when dad saw this one, the same as their old one, and thought ‘oh I’ll have that’.”

The original intention was for Neil’s granddaughter Mikayla to learn to drive in the classic bug, but quickly they realised that the notoriously temperamental model was not the best starting point.

But this was enough to have a third generation of the family become invested in the volkswagen line.

When her dad passed Meredith was determined to make sure they held on to the bug which she and husband Rod enjoy taking for drives on weekends – when the weather is agreeable.

Last year they heard about Dubs By The Lake and realised they have been missing out.

“We’ve been missing out on all the fun, it was a great weekend we really enjoyed it,” Meredith said.

“People come from everywhere, you meet people from all over and everyone is really happy to chat.”

Mikayla was thrilled to take away the best beetle in the show and shine and Dubs By The Lake is now cemented in the family calendar.

Dubs By The Lake 2022 is on February 26 and 27 at Lake Liddell Recreation Area with proceeds from the entry fee going to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

There is plenty to see and do with grass events, limbo, fireworks and more on Saturday, with the show and shine on Sunday.

Market and food stalls as well as entertainment running across both days including go karting, rock climbing wall and lazer tag.
