Singleton Tidy Towns members are heading to Albury early March for the annual presentation of the New South Wales Tidy Towns Awards.

Singleton Heights Preschool will have a huge presence with both director Neisha Dean and staff member Angela Fuller going on the ride.

The preschool won the educational facility award category back in 2019 and its strong focus on sustainability, recycling and student awareness of human impacts on the environment has substantially increased since then.  To the point, some of these young students spend time during their family holidays collecting rubbish from the beach, such is the educational influence.

Tidy Towns assessor Doug McDonald visited Singleton twice during the assessment period to see sustainability in action across the Local Government Area.

Singleton Tidy Towns president Lynne McBain has been involved in the organisation since 1992 and has been president since 1996 and has watched the program evolve from primarily a litter reduction initiative to the all-inclusive sustainable and community spirit program that it is today.

Singleton has entered 10 of the 14 categories, largely as a result of the recognition of award winners announced last year in Murrurundi after this town won the prestigious overall category award.

“We sometimes take for granted what is being done in our communities and I think Singleton, as a whole of community, is doing some amazing, caring and environmentally wonderful things across a whole range of organisations and we need to remind ourselves of this,” Lynne said.

Winners will be announced at a function on March 5 and if Singleton does win the NSW overall award, it will host the annual presentation later this year which provides the opportunity to showcase to the rest of New South Wales exactly what is being done.
