The Muswellbrook Cats are getting a head start on their 2025 competition now by running an AFL9’s competition to welcome new players to the sport and keep returning players active.
Starting on Wednesday July 31 the condensed, non- contact, version of the game offers a great introduction to the sport according to club treasure and AFL 9’s coordinator Samantha Paterson.
“You do get a lot of people who are new to AFL who might be a bit funny about the tackling and the contact,” she said.
“This is a great introduction into the sport as well, you get to learn the rules and do the fitness and all of that without any of the contact to begin with.”
AFL 9’s is a mixed competition for players from 15 years and up, and while the draw can’t be done up until they finalise how many teams there are, it will all be in the evening on Wednesdays without any additional training nights.
Teams will need 12-14 players registered so they have sufficient numbers to take to the field each week, with three women required to be on the field at all times.
“You don’t need to have a team so you can register it as an individual and then we can place you in a team, if you’ve only got a couple of mates then again, you can register as individuals and just make a note that these are my friends can I please be with them,” Samantha said.
Anyone wanting to get involved is asked to reach out to the Muswellbrook Cats on Facebook or via their website muswellbrookcats.com.
