Rain can quickly take away the reality of drought but for many in the Upper Hunter, the impacts of a long, dry season continues to wreak its devastation.
The reality of the situation comes with the stories of those who have run out of water, those who are struggling to pay bills or buy food.
When Singleton Lion’s member Judy Langbein called Singleton Neighbourhood Centre’s Judy Mitchell earlier this year to ask how she was going, drought became the highlight of their conversation.
The club had already indicated they wanted to support people affected by drought and had money to share from the Central Coast and Newcastle Hunter Farmer’s Relief Fund raised by Lions Clubs within that district.
This money went to the Upper Hunter Zone and Lions was quick to choose the Neighbourhood Centre to distribute the significant donation.
“The money isn’t just for farming families but anyone living on properties who are doing it tough,” Judy Langbein said.
In response Judy Mitchell said she cannot believe the generosity of the Lions Club and said the money would be well spent.
“We have people already who we know need assistance and are needing help,” Mrs Mitchell said.
“One lady living on the land was coming here to fill up containers with water so we arranged to have a load of water delivered to her and I know it was a huge relief.
“We sincerely thank Lions for their ongoing support.”
