Simpson Shield Returns To Singleton

Singleton’s Pirtek Park played host to the 2021 Steve Simpson Shield Open Sevens tournament last week.

This year’s edition featured 2020 Division A winners St Mary’s, Scone with members from their recent triumph.

While there was no final this year, Singleton’s St Catherine’s Catholic College and Singleton Public School line-ups both went through undefeated before vocal home fans.

“This year our aim was to just have as many schools participate and enjoy their rugby league,” NRL officials Daniel Swan and Luke Lawrence explained.

The highlight of the tournament was the appearance of its namesake.

Participants from across the region were able to meet former NRL premiership player Steve Simpson after the tournament.

The former Newcastle Knights great enjoyed the spectacle.

“This tournament gets better every year and to see an under-10s division and many more girls take the sport on makes for a great tournament going forward,” Simpson told The Hunter River Times.
