Community Really Cares about the Environment

Sunday saw the community across the Upper Hunter come together to clean up their shared backyards.

Clean Up Australia Day is an initiative of the Keep Australia Beautiful movement and puts the spotlight on the environment across the country.

Locally, volunteers stepped out with enthusiasm across the region to focus their attention to civic shared space, roadsides and footpaths.

Despite the wet weather, volunteers joined the campaigns in Muswellbrook, Upper Hunter and Singleton.

Clean Up Australia Day is an annual event that was started by one person more than 30 years ago, and is now the nation’s largest environmental community-based initiative.

Many families, schools, businesses and organizations participate in activities on the day, to raise awareness and help care for the environment.

The focus of Clean Up Australia has grown over the years, to now inspire the community to live more sustainably each day of the year.

Speaking to some of the volunteers on the day and they indicate that cleaning up their community is part of their everyday life.

Of notice this year around is the number of discarded masks that are on the increase.

Again the message is simple, make sure you dispose of your rubbish appropriately and if possible, snip the elastic on masks to ensure they don’t pose a threat to wildlife should they somehow make their way into the environment.
