Three levels of government came together last Monday to officially mark the end of work in Kelly Street, Scone.

Member for New England Barnaby Joyce, Member for Upper Hunter Dave Layzell and Upper Hunter Shire councillors Maurice Collison and Eril Shields were all on hand to mark the official opening of the main street rejuvenation work.

Despite having attracted some criticism while it caused headaches for businesses trading in the main street, now that it is finished it is something for the community to be proud of.

“To have had the old, tired Kelly Street and have it brought up to where it is today thanks to the governments, it’s so important,” Maurice Collison, Upper Hunter Shire Mayor said of the project that started in June 2022.

“It’s something to be proud of now, and that’s the big thing, we’ve still got a few haters, but you walk down here now and everyone says how great it is and how proud they are of Kelly Street.”

At the simple yet significant ceremony held in the St Aubins Town Square on Monday Morning Cr Collison acknowledged all the project partners, as well as the businesses who handled the disruption as best they could and are now reaping the rewards.
