Kindy kids get extra community support

The Rotary Club of Scone is continuing their tradition of giving starter packs to children starting kindergarten.

The idea came about after members had conversations with schools about how many students were not prepared for starting school.

“So, we thought what we would do is put together a little package with things in it that kids needed to be able to do when they came to school,” Rotary Club of Scone secretary Lindy Hunt said.

“We’ve got things they can count with and a little book with New South Wales Foundation handwriting that they can trace over with their triangular pencil so they can hold it properly.”

Also included are pegs to help with fine motor skills and tape that can be placed on the carpet creating different shapes and to make an obstacle to jump over.

There has been nothing but praise for the project which is moving into its fourth year.

“We did a trial the first year and started with Scone Public, then we did St Mary’s and Scone Public (the following year) and now we do all three of the schools in Scone.

“This year we are giving about 150 packs which is just fantastic.

“We have been really fortunate to have some sponsorship this year because it has been really hard for us to raise money.

“Mach Energy, Foxy Lady Finance and Hunt’a’Book are our sponsors so we match what they put in and we have been able to make ends meet and provide a box for every family coming into kindy.”
