The NSW Minerals Council’s Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Awards celebrate the people and projects driving excellence and innovation in those areas. This year the Upper Hunter has scooped the pool.
More than 500 industry representatives came together at Rydges Resort, Hunter Valley on August 4 to recognise the outstanding contributions across the sector.
“The quality of entries and the standards of innovation, leadership and impact demonstrated this year are exceptional,” said NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee.
“These awards shine a light on the people and initiatives that make our industry safer, more sustainable, and more connected to our local communities. We are proud to acknowledge the dedication and ingenuity that drives these positive outcomes,” he said.
The Health Excellence Award went to The Bloomfield Group for their implementation of a cultural transformation program on site at Rix’s Creek in response to the Respect@Work report.
The program includes targeted training, expert collaboration, and practical leadership development that has reduced psychological claims, has had high employee engagement and improved leadership capability.
Glencore’s Bulga Open Cut took out the Safety Excellence Award. Daniel Crebert developed a cost-effective remote inspection system to enhance safety and efficiency during heavy mining equipment inspections.
The system utilises GoPro cameras and custom magnetic mounts improving accuracy and streamlining maintenance.
Glencore took out the Environmental Excellence Award as well for their Liddell Coal Rehabilitation Certification. It is the first to achieve mine rehab certification under NSW’s enhanced reforms.
Over 15 years, 52 hectares of land was transformed into productive grazing pasture just 12 months after mining ceased.
And finally, the Community Excellence Award went to well-known local organisation Blackrock Industries for their Second Chance for Change program.
It’s a pioneering initiative supporting Aboriginal men during the final stages of incarceration with real employment, training and mentorship.
