Bowlers from across the Upper Hunter are set to roll up for the richest lawn bowls event in the region next month.

The November Triples is being held on the first weekend of December and the competitors list was full in a matter of weeks according to RSL Bowls president Laurie Wattus.

Teams will play five games over the two days and there is prize money up for gabs for winning ends, as well as for the top team at the end of the weekend.

“It’s good to get people here on the green and give them a weekend of bowls, which is definitely better than a weekend at home mowing the lawn,” Wattus said with a laugh.

“I think it’s like every other sport, people have been climbing the walls wanting to get out.

“We’ve had some good days since the opening back up of the greens, we had some Merriwa visitors last week because their greens are still closed.”

Muswellbrook RSL Club have stepped up to provide the prize money for the competition, which CEO Daryl Egan said they are happy to do each year.

“This is the annual one, the big one that we give them a donation every year of about $5,000 to go towards the bowls tournament and then also ongoing costs like uniforms and running expenses,” he added.

Wattus shared that there are quite a few women are starting to get involved with the sport which is positive, and they are hoping to encourage more younger players onto the greens.

“It’s turning slowly but surely into a younger person’s game because there is money to be made in bowls and I think people are starting to realise it’s not a bad came,” he concluded.

“It’s a bit competitive, a bit social, everything comes together and it’s a good day out.”

Anybody that might be interested in giving the game a go is welcome to head to the Muswellbrook RSL Club on a Thursday or Saturday from 10am to meet members and see what is involved, they have bowls that can be used to give it a go.
