BIG is an understatement when it comes to talking about what the Scone and District Cancer Support Group achieve at one of their annual Cancer Council fundraising events.

They may have missed two years of hosting a Biggest Morning Tea, but residents will be pleased to know it will be back later this month.

“We are very pleased to be able to get together again, as part of the community, and in the past, they have been a great event for the community,” group secretary Carolyn Carter said.

“A lot of people come and sit down together, have a cup of tea, have a chat, and they’re also very keen to support our group and the Cancer Council.”

The Biggest Morning Tea will be at Scone Uniting Church Hall on Thursday, May 19, from 9am until around 2pm, or whenever the cakes run out.

Putting on a great morning tea is not all the Scone and District Cancer Support Group do in the Upper Hunter community, they have provided support for over 25 years to help terminally ill individuals remain in their homes for longer.

They have acquired funds from the community to purchase palliative care equipment, from bedpans to beds, lift chairs to walkers, that are all available through Scone Hospital to those who are facing terminal illness.

They also offer a Helping Hands service which provides meals to people who are undergoing treatment or as support for families who have lost someone, to ensure their basic needs of a decent meal are met through difficult times.

Both services are free of charge, which on its own takes some of the stress away from the situation.

Scone and District Cancer Support Group are always happy to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with the group, just give president June Day a call on 0428 432 531, or have a chat to the ladies when you are grabbing your cake and cuppa at the Biggest Morning Tea.
