Singleton’s Pirtek Park played host to the 2021 Steve Simpson Shield Open Sevens tournament this afternoon.

This year’s edition featured last year’s Division A winners St Mary’s, Scone with members from their 2020 triumph.

While there was no final this year, Singleton’s St Catherine’s Catholic College and Singleton Public School line-ups both went through undefeated before vocal home fans.

Students from Singleton’s St Catherine’s Catholic College asked Steve Simpson about his famous NRL career with the Newcastle Knights.

“This year our aim was to just have as many schools participate and enjoy their rugby league,” NRL officials Daniel Swan and Luke Lawrence explained.

The highlight of the tournament was the appearance of its namesake.

Participants from across the region were able to meet former NRL premiership player Steve Simpson after the tournament.

The former Newcastle Knights great (who also represented New South Wales and Australia) was grew up in the region (in Broke, near Singleton) and enjoyed today’s spectacle.

“This tournament gets better every year and to see an under-10s division and many more girls take the sport on makes for a great tournament going forward,” Simpson told The Hunter River Times.
