Scone based Brett Cavanough Racing had a busy day at the Acorp Muswellbrook Gold Cup with 10 horses running across the eight races last Friday.

They had a mixed bag of results, but two wins and some promising showings from young horses meant it was an overall positive day at the races.

“There’s just a lot of races to suit our horses today, which is good for us to get a run so close to home,” Georgie Cavanough shared.

“They do a great job at Muswellbrook Race Club, so it’s fantastic to be able to support them with 10 runners, and the track’s in good order, obviously today it chopped up a bit late, but it was in good order.”

The meeting started with a second place for two-year-old filly Shenandoah River, ridden by Mitchell Bell, who has only had one trial before making her first race start last week.  She came in a close second to the hot favourite for the race.

Then they got a win with Merchant Gold, and followed that up with another for Fingers Hunter, both ridden by Braith Nock.

“Then we had Williamsburg in the Cup, which I thought was a brave effort, the track didn’t suit him at all, it’s shifty ground, late, and his first Cup with some very patient owners,” Georgie said of the fifth-place finisher.

“The track became poor late in the day, but all the horses before that were fantastic and it’s a credit to our staff, our team.

“I’ve got a fantastic young team of staff and they put all the hard work in, and you get the rewards, which is good.”

The staff at Cavanough Racing is a mix of youth and experience, as they recognise the importance of giving apprentices and young trainers an opportunity to make a start in the industry.

Georgie also expressed that having the opportunity to work alongside experienced people in the industry help keep their knowledge alive.
