Applications are now open for the Singleton Emergency Services Internship.

The eight-week program, which commences on October 19, will expose interns to emergency management principals.

A mix of theoretical and hands on activities, 15 successful applicants will be able to increase skills about emergency responding, preparedness, leadership and communication.

“This is a first for NSW and we already know other areas have already started to look at what we are doing to see if they can replicate the program,” Jo Schultz (Acting Commander – Hunter Valley Police District) told The Hunter River Times.

“Singleton is an area blessed with natural beauty but we have also had natural disasters so this program I think it fits very well with our area.

Applicants will receive firsthand experience from a long list of emergency service industries.

They don’t all have flashing blue and red lights either.

“This program also allows applicants to learn about the ability to work in emergency management without necessarily putting on a uniform,” Simone Dearing (Co-ordination Officer Resilience NSW) added.

“We just saw that with the transition we have just worked with Singleton Council in from response into recovery.”

The historic program is the result of months of liaising between emergency service agencies following the successful applications for funding under the Bush Fire recovery scheme.

Each successful applicant will also receive a certificate at the completion of the program while first aid training is also included in the program.

To apply contact co*****@si*******.au or call 02 65787290.

Applications close on Friday, September 30.
