The Cassilis Historical Society has been working hard to collate a written history of the town, and they have brought it all together in the former Pipers Stock and Station Agency building.
“There was a lot of difficulty finding the ownership of it, because the people who were registered as owners had all died,” Sarah Thompson from the historical said of the Buccleugh Street location.
“It was a huge to-do to do that, and so they did and we had a lot of fundraising in the town, and an initial committee was formed.”
After a lot of labour went into repointing and repairing it, the Cassilis community now has its own museum.
“This isn’t about artifacts, what we’re trying to do is make it a place where the stories of Cassilis can be collected, the stories of the people,” Sarah told The Hunter River Times.
“Every museum’s got an old bed post or an old telephone or an old something, so this is much more about the stories.”
The group has created a Main Street Walk map with information about buildings and the history of the area.
Anyone who is visiting the area can contact the Royal Hotel Cassilis, which is next door to the museum, to arrange a look at what is in the collection.
