The Year 12 Singleton Trade Training Centre VET Primary Industry Class and cattle team members from St Catherine’s Catholic College took centre stage at the Canberra Royal Show winning an abundance of ribbons including the coveted grand champion steer.
The students have been rearing Rim Fire since he was a young calf after selecting him from the offerings of Rouchel’ s Ross and Wendy Lawrence who have been long time supporters of the school’s cattle program.
From the get-go the students agreed he was a good choice.
Since July last year they have been caring for Rim Fire who had a quiet temperament, ideal for the student environment.
They have been closely monitoring his fat cover, ensuring his diet was adapted to his needs and working with the animal to ensure its welfare, break-in and handling would attract the eye of the Canberra judges.
It is the first time the school has trekked to Canberra Royal with teacher, Joanna Towers, taking 21 students, 12 cattle and a team of parent supporters to the event last month.
The widespread success across the student cohort speaks for itself but Joanna says it would not be possible without people like the Lawrence family. Joanna also thanked Almar Limousines, Terry Joy and Greg and Leonie Ball who also provide wonderful support to the cattle program.
