Singleton Mayor Sue Moore was presented with the Elected Representative Award for Regional Councils at the Women in Local Government Awards held in Sydney on Tuesday.
Cr Moore was presented with the award by the Minister for Local Government, Ron Hoenig and Minister for Women Jodie Harrison at Parliament House.
The Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government are a chance to recognise female councillors and council staff who make invaluable contributions to improve the lives of the people they represent and serve.
The awards were established in 2008 to recognise the outstanding efforts of women at the grassroots level of government in metropolitan and regional/rural councils.
Cr Moore discovered she had been nominated back in June and three weeks ago was told she had won the category but was sworn to secrecy until yesterday’s presentation.
Extremely humbled by the award, Cr Moore said she felt a little uncomfortable about the timing given council is currently in caretaker mode with the upcoming local government elections next month. However, she was thrilled to see four Hunter councils among the category recipients and said it was inspirational to hear the role women were playing in the local government arena.
“It highlighted the opportunities working in local government offers, you can start your career in one field and move to another, one of the young recipients said it was like working in a world like nothing else,” Cr Moore said.
