Muswellbrook trainer Sam Kavanagh has confirmed the addition of legendary South Australian jockey Simon Price to his team.
Now, he is eyeing his first win since his long-awaited return.
“Simon won several premierships and he won one when I was my father’s assistant and he was the stable rider,” Kavanagh explained.
“He has won maybe four or five Group One races as well as the Singapore Gold Cup.
“I think he wanted a change of scenery and I’m starting from scratch and he wants to be a part of it.”
Price, father of young gun jockey Will, could be Kavanagh’s missing piece to the puzzle when aiming for that long-awaited win.
Kavanagh has gradually closed in on the feat with four placings in the past two months.
At the present stage, he has 24 horses which is a notable increase from his initial five on return.
These include gelding Sikandarabad who raced at Rose Hill Gardens on Saturday and the Chad-Lever-ridden Dancing Dollar who finished second at Scone.
Both fell short by 1.5m lengths.
However, Kavanagh remains positive for the future.
“It has been tough with Covid because there is not a lot of sport to watch but I think a lot of people are watching the racing and the prize money remains the same,” he explained.
“There’s an opportunity there to buy tried horses from people who have felt a bit of pain from Covid and the first thing to go was their racehorse.
“Other people that may not have been affected that much it is an opportunity to go to the races and have some fun with and hopefully get a return.
“Timing wise it is a 50-50 but there’s always opportunity.”
