New South Wales Country Press Association held their annual conference and awards presentation on Friday night and your paper won Best Free Newspaper New South Wales.
We won and when I say we I sincerely mean we. Your newspaper would not have won without your support, your willingness to share stories in good times and the not so good.
We were recognised for commitment to community and I will say we definitely have your interests at heart and we thank you for your contribution to this massive accolade.
There are a few things you should know. New South Wales Country Press Association is an organisation that supports regional newspapers. Lucie Peart is the president and she is a massive advocate for the print news industry. She is a young mum who works very hard for her business but puts her heart out to support communities and the news they need and want to know.
You have to be a member of the Association to enter the awards so I admit I entered; we weren’t nominated but it is something we have always done to support the organisation.
Not for one minute did I think we were in contention to win the Best Free Newspaper category. We all love what we do but to put our masthead up against all the others was something I never thought would result in a win.
We are delighted to have received this massive recognition but it could not have been achieved without the loyalty and love of a magnificent staff. None of us do it for the money but we do it for you, our readers.
The importance of sharing our local stories has never been more needed. On behalf of all our staff I want to share this award with everyone of our readers.
We are best free newspaper New South Wales because we are the best community in New South Wales and beyond.
We all care for one another, we celebrate the wonderful achievements, the programs to help people to connect, we make life better for those experiencing difficulties, we share the celebrations and the tragedies that seem to be striking us far to often in this past year.
This award it a little plaque that now sits with pride in our shop front. Please come in and we will take a photo of you with it because it is not about us, it is your award and you too need to take a pat on the back.
It is not us; it is you that helps to connect our community by sharing all our local news and The Hunter River Times hopes to continue to keep your news coming for a long time to come.
