Working Equitation is a relatively young sport in Australia and the Upper Hunter has its own club based in Muswellbrook.
“Working Equitation as a sport is very interesting because it covers all styles of riding,” president Kristie Corbett said.
“We have our ladies who come for Western riding, our Australian stockhorse people, our English riders and our endurance type riders, who are obviously keen in their own area but want to get out and start trying new things.”
On the fourth Sunday each month the ladies come together and practice three disciplines – dressage, ease of handling and speed.
“It’s great for young horses and old horses, and some of the naughty ones that come through it gives them a job that they have to do,” Kristie explained.
“It’s also good for the riders because they have to remember where they are going and have to pick up and move obstacles.”
Participants have noticed their riding improve because while they are thinking about the course they don’t think so much about what they are doing.
“Everybody goes home with a big smile on their face – it’s about progressing and having a really good day on your horse.”
Upper Hunter Working Equitation have different coaches come and join them for various styles including equine sport, campdrafting, and dressage.
The group is focused on adults who are looking at getting back into riding or are just wanting to try something new, they have levels suitable for all riding abilities and are always welcoming new members.
