After taking out first place in the NSW WorldSkills competition last year, Emma Joy earned herself a podium place at the National competition in Brisbane last week.

The 20-year-old Singleton champion finished in third place with only a handful of points between her and the national winner in the business administration category.

Emma said she was extremely excited but extremely nervous as she entered the arena at Brisbane Convention Centre along with 600 other entrants competing across all trades.

WorldSkills Australia competitions give young people an opportunity to showcase their talents, benchmark industry excellence, and champion skills pathways.

It was an opportunity offered to Emma because of her business administration traineeship she studied while working at Singleton based Pit Patrol complemented by her certificate three study at Muswellbrook TAFE.

Her name was put forward for the competition by TAFE and she said the mentorship and support she received from her work colleagues at Pit-Patrol and her TAFE teacher from the Muswellbrook campus Kate Ninness was pivotal to her confidence going into the competition.

“Kate came to Brisbane with me and supported me all the way, we chatted at the breaks and we caught up at the end of each day to discuss how I was going which I really appreciated,” Emma told The Hunter River Times.

The three day competition tested the competitors ability on minute taking, excel spreadsheet capabilities, power-point presentation with significant research required across the exams.

Like most school leavers, as a Year 12 student at Singleton High Emma wasn’t sure what career path to take up but applied for the traineeship at Pit Patrol and the job has given her more than she could have ever imagined.

“I loved competing at World Skills and would love to do it again when it is held again in two years’ time in South Australia,” she said.

Massive congratulations to Emma.
