Nominations are now open for the 2025 Upper Hunter Shire Australia Day Awards, providing the community with an opportunity to celebrate and recognise individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to the Shire. These awards honour those who have demonstrated excellence in their field and made a lasting impact on the community.

All residents of the Upper Hunter Shire are eligible to be nominated, and anyone can nominate a deserving individual or group.

The awards are divided into the following categories:

Citizen of the Year: Awarded to a resident or couple in each district who serves as an inspirational role model and has made a significant contribution to the community through either paid or unpaid work.

Young Citizen of the Year: Recognises a resident under the age of 25 (as of 26 January 2025) who has made a meaningful impact on the community and serves as a positive role model.

Local Champion of the Year: Awarded to a resident or community group excelling in any open-age category, such as sport, culture, environmental efforts, or professional achievements.

Sustainability & Environmental Achievement Award (Merriwa District): Presented to a Merriwa district business that demonstrates best practice and serves as a role model in areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, retail, and more.

From the district winners, Council will select an overall Shire Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year. In addition, special awards may be presented to recognise excellence in specific fields as determined by the District Committees and Council.

Nomination forms are available at all Upper Hunter Shire Council Administration Offices and can be downloaded from the Council’s website.

Nominations close at 4:30 pm on Friday, 8 November 2024.

Don’t miss the chance to celebrate those who contribute to making our Shire a better place!
