Things Get Icy at Muswellbrook Hospital

BY JEM ANSHAW

Following a successful Christmas period, the Lions Club of Muswellbrook have been able to make yet another donation to Muswellbrook Hospital.

Three ice machines will be purchased for maternity, the emergency department and a third in the general ward much to the delight of health services manager Karen Cainey.

“Rural hospitals are really dependant on support from the community and without them we don’t have those little extra luxuries,” she said.

“It is really nice to know that Muswellbrook Hospital is being well supported by the community, it just makes our patients’ stays a little more comfortable.”

The ice machines are a bit more complex than what you would have at home, being required to meet infection control standards, and will be useful for women in labour wanting to chew on something, relieving nausea and for treating swelling.

Lions president Wilma Holmes said they are always happy to support the hospital, having already received the next wish list item while making this donation.

“Any money we raise must be donated in our own community and the hospital is always a worthwhile recipient,” she said.

The hard work the service group puts in in the community is greatly appreciated by those they help, but for it to keep happening there is a need for more members to get involved.

“Younger members give fresh ideas, and any help to do the things we need to do is appreciated,” Wilma said.
