Jai returns down under

Australian cyclist Jai Hindley is back on home soil.

The 26-year-old, who made history in May as the first Australian to win the Giro D’Italia, has arrived in Wollongong to compete in the 2022 UCI Road World Championships’ men’s elite road race this Sunday.

It is only the second time in history the championships have been held in Australia. Hindley may be the first Australian to win it on home soil after Norwegian Thor Hushovd took out the 2010 title when it was held in Geelong.

Though he tested positive for covid-19 on September 12 he was described as “largely asymptomatic” and has been heavily monitored since.

“It will be the first time I have been back to Australia in three years and I am pretty bloody excited to be honest,” Hindley said last week.

This excitement has been matched by his Singleton based grandmother Marge Cook, 90, who tuned into his entire Giro D’Italia coverage earlier this year.
