Nathan Duncan Shield returns to Singleton

BY ALEX TIGANI

The Singleton Roosters and Muswellbrook Cats will once again play off for the Nathan Duncan Shield after a trial match date of March 25 was confirmed by both clubs this week.

The Roosters, who finished bottom of last year’s top tier competition, hope to increase playing numbers in 2023 with the return of a reserve grade team to compete in the AFL Hunter Central Coast’s third tier competition.

The Cats, who finished runner up in last year’s third tier competition, caught the Roosters by surprise last year when holding a one goal lead for a majority of their trial match held at Weeraman Fields.

A late goal would allow the Roosters to prevail 2.9 (21) to 2.6 (18).

This year’s clash will mark the Roosters second practise match after they play host to Sydney’s Wollondilly Knights on March 11.

Both games will be played at Singleton’s Rose Point Park.

MEANWHILE the Singleton Roosterettes will also be hosting the Muswellbrook Cats, Maitland Saints, Port Stephens Power and Gunnedah Bulldogs in the inaugural Bush to Beach AFL carnival on March 25.
