Give where you live challenge calls on community to donate blood

Is Muswellbrook the best? Is it more generous than other Hunter Valley towns?

The proof will be in the blood bag this week when Red Cross Lifeblood teams up with 2NM 98.1 to continue the Give Where You Live blood in Muswellbrook, which will see towns across the Hunter Valley donate blood during September and October to see who can give the most.

The mobile blood service will be at PCYC car park, Carl Street in Muswellbrook this Wednesday 4th October, Thursday 5th, and Friday 6th October, and locals are being encouraged to make an appointment to donate and have their donation added to Muswellbrook’s tally.

Set to re-ignite old town rivalries, the campaign, which pits town against town, is aimed at finding out which town has the biggest heart when it comes to blood donation.

All blood donations given by Muswellbrook residents this week will be automatically counted, and the mobile blood service has also visited Scone where 111 donations were made and will be in Singleton next week.

Lifeblood spokesperson Brian Bruce thanked 2NM and Hunter Valley communities for their support of blood donation, and said the friendly rivalry was all aimed at saving lives.

“We know Muswellbrook and Hunter Valley residents are generous and want to use that to encourage friendly competition,” Mr Bruce said.

“There are well-known rivalries between areas we’d like to leverage this rivalry in a positive way – by challenging one and all to save lives by rolling up their sleeves.”

Each year, more than 1.4 million blood donations are used in Australia to save the lives of people with cancer, heart, stomach and bowel disease, accident or trauma victims, pregnant mothers and newborn babies.

One in three people will need blood in their lifetime, yet only one in 30 currently donates – chances are they could be your next door neighbour.
