Scone in Scone to Bring Out the Best Bakers

BY JEM ANSHAW

It is time again to dust of grandma’s recipe book and get whipping the cream – Have a Scone in Scone is back again.

“Last year it was just so well received by everybody, people were eating and voting in all the cafes and then people got in involved with the Great Scone Bake Off,” Scone Chamber board member Rachael McGuirk said.

“We figured with the disruption in the main street that we need to do everything we possibly can to promote people shopping locally and getting into local cafes, and the event last year was so well received.”

The community are also able to try their hand at baking the best scone in Scone with the Great Scone Bake Off that will take place at Scone Public School’s Blooms Markets on November 4, with entries needing to be dropped off by 9am for judging and announcements will be made during the markets that run from 3pm to 7pm.

“There are five different categories which is traditional, pumpkin, date, cheese and then open and that open section you can go as wild and woolly as you’d like,” Rachael shared, adding she hopes to throw her hat in the ring with a gin and tonic recipe.

Entries need to be six separate scones of at least six centimetres in diameter, and the CWA advice last year was that it is more about the taste than appearance.

“Just get your entries in, flavour is the deciding factor in competition judging so even if you think they don’t look special, they may still win if they’ve got the flavour,” Rachael recalled of last year’s advice.

From October 28 to November 4 most cafes in Scone are participating in the people’s choice competition, with a QR code available at participating sites for voting.

There are also a number of great events during the week including Scone Races, Barefoot Bowls, Garden Parties, Devonshire Teas, Museums opening their doors, the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza and more.
