Muswellbrook the Winner in Flint Cup

The Flint Cup has returned to the Muswellbrook Eagles after they defeated the Scone Mustangs in an exciting local derby on the weekend.

For 70 years the two clubs have come together for a trial match to assist in preparation for the season ahead.

“That was a good hit out for the boys first trial game,” committee member Douglas Thomson shared after the match.

“We’ve got a mix of the 35s, Saturdays and Friday night all-age teams but we’ve all been training together at the start of the season so it was good to get everybody in.

“We linked up pretty well and there’s a good spirit around the club, I think that’s the most important thing.”

The Eagles defeated the Mustangs four to one in the main match, but the junior games that preceded it went a bit more in the home teams’ favour.

Scone’s under 10s defeated the Muswellbrook under 11s 3 to 2.  In the under 12s it went to Muswellbrook with a final score of 13 to 1, and Scone got over Muswellbrook in the under 14s,  3 to 1.

While the Eagles are enthusiastic about their four senior teams running in 2024, which includes a women’s side, Douglas shared it is the juniors that are the real future.

“To be able to have your junior traveling teams play and then the seniors play all in the same pitch is important, we all get to watch each other and it’s something they can look forward to, they can see what the future is and their potential at Muswellbrook,” he said.

“We’ve got a good spirit around the club, everyone gets in and helps out each and that’s what we’ve really tried to foster over the last couple of years, I think it’s really paying off.”

The next hit out for the Eagles will be against Morisset at Victoria Park, Muswellbrook, on Saturday April 6, with the over 35s kicking off at 1pm and all age at 2.30pm.

All going to plan the womens side will also have a trial match at home early April as the new team finds their feet.
