Program Targets Junior AFL Players

The Muswellbrook Cats will next week welcome kids aged five to 16 years to try AFL and sign up for the Auskick or Superkick programs.

Jane Matheson has been running the junior program in Muswellbrook for some years now and loves getting the kids involved with a sport that runs deep in her family.

“It’s just really nice to get the kids together, they learn a bit about the game, they learn some of the skills like the handballing and the kicking, some of the rules and just have fun as well,” she shared.

“There’s no weekend competition or anything, it’s just a skills-based program.”

In Muswellbrook there is not a huge AFL following, but the five- to seven-year-old Auskick program has always been popular so this year the Cats are hoping to get some older kids to stay engaged with a second program.

“We’re really trying to introduce what we’re calling Superkick which is for the more skilled 10- to 15-year-olds,” Jane explained.

“We want to get some more kids involved to start loving it and sticking with it for a few years and then hopefully joining the senior Cats.”

The first night of the Auskick program will be on Thursday, May 2 from 4.30pm and anyone who is interested is encouraged to head along and give it a go, there is no requirement to register for this first night.

There is a sibling discount available for families registering more than one child, for more information on how to claim this or about the program in general contact the Muswellbrook Cats AFC on Facebook or email janematheson83@gmail.com.
