Change your clock, change your smoke alarm

SHARE THE STORY:

It is a simple message local fire fighters share every year but there are plenty of people who don’t bother to change their smoke alarm batteries in line with daylight saving.

Fire fighter Andrew Porters pleaded with the community to take the step and said anyone who was unable to do so, could call on their local fire fighters to help out.

Traditionally fire fighters have assisted older members of the community to complete the task but covid has changed the process.

It is not as simple as walking into someone’s home anymore.

“We can negate around that stuff, it is just important people make sure they change their batteries,” Mr Porters said.

He added that fire fighters can also provide advice on home safety and it was only a matter of contacting your local fire station.

“All the fire stations have Home Safety Checklist procedures that we are happy to go through and we also have plenty of colouring books and activities for the kids to ensure they are fire aware,” he said.

“We have missed our preschool visits and couldn’t have our open day but fire doesn’t know what covid is so we have to make sure the message still gets through,” Mr Porters said. Those needing assistance or advice are welcome to drop into their fire station or leave a note in the station’s  letterbox with contact details so fire fighters can respond.
