Bev’s shawl judged the best

BY DI SNEDDON

Bev Walker is an embroiderer but last year she entered the knitting section and her beautiful shawl she created from a pattern she found in a magazine took out the champion knit of Singleton Show.

Bev Walker has entered her embroidery in Singleton show for many years but last year she was encouraged to enter her knitting just to mix it up a bit.

Once she entered she didn’t think another thing about it. She was too busy helping chief steward Val Smith set up the displays but when she went to look at the exhibit after the judging she got the shock of her life when she saw the champion ribbon pinned to the shawl she had made.

“I really didn’t think it was good enough and I knew there were mistakes in it but my friend (fellow champion embroiderer) Lyn Hiscox said only I would know that,” Bev said.

And it seems this was true.  Since then Bev has made her grandchildren and great grandchildren scarves and when she gets a bit sick of knitting, she goes back to her embroidery.  Covid has seen her spend plenty of time creating – what else is there to do when you are sitting at home.

No doubt, if the show had gone ahead, Bev would have won a few more prizes this year.
