Parkour on tour at Scone

Youth in the Upper Hunter leapt into learning new skills at the postponed Youth Week activities held during recent school holidays.

It was a full house at Scone Youth Centre for a series of workshops run by Newcastle Parkour that taught the kids some useful yet fun tricks according to youth worker Andrew Murray.

“It’s something that is active which is great, getting kids engaged, it is super fun and a bit different,” he said of their choice in activity.

“We had the Newcastle Parkour crew come up for the day to run the workshop.

“It’s not just about jumping and running and falling.

“It is about doing those things well and getting kids to understand how their bodies work and getting them involved in learning how to use them in a way that is fun and safe.”

The sessions were intended to take place in April during National Youth Week using funding granted for the Federal Government.

Mr Murray said there were a number of considerations that needed to be made in terms of covid safe practices but the sessions ticked all the boxes.

“We had to limit our numbers which was unfortunate due to covid,” he said.

“We have had a good response and we are pretty happy with how it’s gone.

“I think it is something we can look at doing more in the future hopefully with high numbers again.”

The Youth Centres in the Upper Hunter Shire Area are gearing up for a busy Term 4 program that will include making use of the pools in Scone, Merriwa and Murrurundi for their after school sessions.
