Upgrades for Singleton PCYC boxing facility

Singleton PCYC manager Dave Andrews was all smiles last week following the announcement of upgrades to his centre’s boxing ring.

United Wambo Joint Venture’s Aislinn Farnon (Environment and Community Manager) was on hand to present the centre a cheque of $4,075 for upgrades to the boxing ring and new equipment.

“The money goes towards an upgrade on the boxing ring and new canvas,” Andrews explained.

“The one we have is currently held up by masking tape.”

Andrews highlighted that boxing was one of the PCYC’s four foundation sports when first established in 1937 (along with gymnastics, basketball and reading).

Singleton PCYC boxing coach Stephen Crew has also welcomed the news.

He hopes to see new ropes and new pads added to the ring.

“I started out at Speers Point when I was 13 years old, I’m 44 and still doing it,” he laughed.

“I enjoy keeping fit and getting in there with the young fellas.

“A lot of people here who have been coached have become coaches and there’s been a lot of blood sweat and tears on that one (ring).”
