There wasn’t a dry eye around Cahill Oval on Saturday afternoon when the Muswellbrook Rams celebrated their women’s tackle premiership.

The Rams finished on top of the table in the Hunter Junior Rugby League under-17 women’s tackle competition and returned home with a 28-8 grand final win against Raymond Terrace.

It marked the third time the playing group had claimed the ultimate prize in four years and, had it not been for the 2021 covid lockdown, the side would have easily claimed a four-peat of titles.

“We knew that they (Raymond Terrace) would come out strong even though we had beaten them all year so we had to match them early,” Muswellbrook Ram Kyah Johnston told The Hunter River Times this week.

“I guess we just had to play as a team like we had all season, we knew we had the ability and we just had to take it onto the field.”

Fathers’ Day came 24 hours early for winning coach and Muswellbrook Rams’ legend Gary ‘Bomber’ Jones when his daughter Evie was named as the player of the match. 

Her teammates agreed, she was the standout player.

“She is always picking the team up and making sure everyone plays their roles,” Johnston concluded.

“We’re in the halves together so it is always nice to play alongside my best friend let alone win a premiership with her.”

MEANWHILE the Muswellbrook Rams celebrated a convincing 16-4 under-14 grand final win for coach Matthew Milton against Cessnock at Harper Oval.
