Strongman Comp a Show Feature

Strongman is a sport that is gaining popularity with athletes keen to feel the satisfaction of moving heavy weights.

It is also an exciting sport to watch, and locals have the opportunity to get behind athletes at the Upper Hunter Strongest Open and Novice Strongman Competition taking place at the Upper Hunter Show.

“Novice is beginners who have never done to see if they like it and then the open division is people who’ve been competing before and have some experience,” local competitor Robert Marlow explained.

The competition on Saturday will have five different events; yoke carry to farmers carry; overhead monster dumbbell, keg and log; wagon wheel deadlift for reps; carry medley and the stones.

“The weights are not that ridiculous like a normal comp, so are pretty reasonable for every weight category,” Robert said when asked how challenging it might be.

“In each class everyone lifts the same weight unless you’re doing a max lift and then you choose your weights.”

With the events at this competition there will be no max lifts, but without doubt there will be some personal achievements throughout the day.

The strongman competition will be adjacent to the Cattle Lawn from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and is also an opportunity for anyone interested in knowing more about the sport to have a chat to the guys who train at Muswellbrook Crossfit about how they can give Strongman a go.
