Blast from the Past

BY DI SNEDDON

We all have treasures in our photo album and when local Wonnarua elder, Laurie Perry, came across this one he thought Anzac Day 2023 might be just the time to share it with the community.

Jean Miller is Rhoda Perry’s mother and Laurie’s grandmother who was born in Singleton in 1910.

Jean spent some her young life living at the St Clair Aboriginal Mission Carrowbrook before moving to Redbournberry Hill with her mother (Harriet Waters). Harriet’s mother, Sarah Waters, was gifted the land at Redbournberry Hill before it was later revoked..

“I can remember going to visit my grandmother on Redbournberry hill as a kid,” Laurie said.

Redbournberry Hill is one of three places that now have Aboriginal protection by the NSW Government in the Singleton Local Government Area along with St Clair Aboriginal Mission property at Carrowbrook and Baiame Cave at Milbrodale.

“I just thought the photo was interesting, Nan was so well dressed and I am told it was Anzac Day in about 1930,” Laurie said.
