Thank You to the Volunteers

Bruce Merrick is the longest serving Uniting Care volunteer so no wonder he received a gift in recognition of volunteers week last month.

Uniting Care Elizabeth Gates aged care facility is based in Singleton and enjoys the presence of around 40 regular volunteers of which Bruce is one.

Speaking at the lunch, Bruce said he wouldn’t volunteer if he didn’t enjoy it.

He began entertaining the aged care residents back in 1971 and was a member of a musical group.

Over the years Bruce said he has made wonderful friendships amongst volunteers and residents who have become like family.

Uniting Care Elizabeth Gates Leisure, Wellness and Volunteer coordinator Cindy Macdonell said the visits from volunteers was very much appreciated by the residents.

“Things have been tough over the past few years, but our volunteers hung in there and we are very grateful,” Cindy said.

Elizabeth Gates volunteers support a range of programs including arts and craft, entertainment, gardening, spiritual programs, hair dressing, hand care and others are involved on the auxiliary.

Anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to give Cindy a call on 0466 476 160.

“it doesn’t matter whether volunteers are doing a small or larger task, there is so much enjoyment amongst the residents when they see the visitors,” Cindy said.
