Nangar Jim Wins Four from Four

Dungog-based greyhound trainer Joe McFadyen made it four wins from as many starts with new acquisition Nangar Jim when that chaser saluted at Maitland dogs on Monday evening.

The youngster was brilliantly away from box eight and never gave his rivals a look-in, stretching out to win by four-and-one-quarter lengths in a blistering 22.13 – the fastest time over the 400-metre distance in 2023.

It maintained the greyhound’s unbeaten run since joining McFadyen’s kennel in July – having now won six races altogether from 10 starts, with an additional three placings.

“He is a very exciting young dog,” McFadyen’s partner Kat Ernst said.

“Obviously he has to keep stepping up – both in class and distance – but he is doing everything right at this stage and we couldn’t be happier with him.”

Nangar Jim will return to Maitland next Monday – this time over the 450-metre distance, with a crack at the upcoming Group 2 Black Top at The Gardens a possible target.

“He is only young, so obviously we don’t want to push him too soon, but he is running the times and showing us, he is ready to take on the next challenge,” Ernst explained.

“His next start will tell us a lot on where he is at. Hopefully we can then give him a trial or two at The Gardens and if he runs up to what we think he is capable of, then there is no reason not to have a crack at the Black Top.

“Dogs like him don’t come around too often – so if you don’t have a go, you’ll never know.”

The heats of the Black Top will be run on September 15 – the final a week later worth a massive $40,000 to the winner.
