Muswellbrook teenager Kobi Wright won the POWRi Racing Australia Microsprint Junior National Title at Lake Liddell Speedbowl on the long weekend

In front of an ecstatic home crowd, Kobi Wright became a national champion at Lake Liddell  Speedbowl on the weekend.

It was only the second race meeting in a Microsprint for Kobi, but consistency and sheer determination paid off for the Muswellbrook teen.

“It feels pretty good, probably pays all our hard work off coming from last season to now, it’s pretty cool to get a national title,” Kobi told The Hunter River Times at the POWRi Racing Australia Microsprint National Titles.

It all came down to the 30 lap feature race on Sunday night, with qualifying and heat placings across Saturday and Sunday nights dictating the starting positions for the A main.

“Coming out of two I was a bit hesitant on whether we were gonna get it or not, the track was pretty good but our car wasn’t the best so we fell back to third,” Kobi shared.

“But we were sticking with the leaders and they ended up wrecking each other so once I got out in front I was pretty confident and we got it done.”

This title could be considered bittersweet, as the number one sticker placed on his car as soon as it stopped moving will become redundant next season when Kobi steps up into the senior classes.

“We might have to chuck it on to take a photo and then rip it back off, hopefully we’ll come out and try and do the same thing in the seniors but it’s gonna be a fair bit harder,” he laughed.

With the Formula 500’s season now wrapped up, focus will turn to preparing for the next when it is likely Kobi will follow his dad Andrews footsteps and jump behind the wheel of a Sprintcar once he turns 16 next month.

Without a lot of support Kobi would not have been able to have the final juniors season he has, his sponsors are KOAB Industries, Complete Pars and Equipment Solutions, Osborn’s Transport, Eliminator Race Wings, Top Line Titanium, Scotty’s Fabricate and Paint, and Triple X Race Chassis.

“Just got to thank mum and dad for letting me travel, letting me race and do something I enjoy, Abbie and pop and everyone that’s come along and helped with the car along the way, whether it’s been good or when we haven’t been so good, and thanks to the Blakes who have jumped on at the end of the season,” Kobi said.
