Singleton’s Howe Park cricket grounds has been ranked as one of the best in the State.
Wet weather saw the Singleton wicket used as an alternative for the first round in the National Over 50s carnival, a four day competition held annually.
The NSW Waratahs had nothing but praise for the venue they had been delivered on the first day of play on Sunday, moved from the original Charlestown ground.
“This is equal to the first grade premier grounds standard in Sydney,” said team captain Matt Lewis.
Prepared to step on the field to bat against South Australia, Matt could not believe the venue.
The team bowled out South Australia for 125 runs and were confident to chase the total.
“The wicket is rock hard, it is very good, you couldn’t get better,” Matt said.
The competition began on Sunday and is played around grounds in different locations in the Hunter Valley. There are two divisions and eight teams from around Australia and New Zealand competing.
Finals from the first and second division were contested on November 8.
For player Matt Turner, playing in an over 50s competition is something he loves.
There is great camaraderie and a shared love for the game many have played since they were juniors.
Greg Thrift is the curator and all gave him a round of applause for his dedication to the presentation of the ground.
