The first round of the NSW HQ Racing series was a pearler for Brett Osborn who enjoyed a clean sweep from qualifying through to the final chequered flag at Winton Motor Raceway.
“We went down and qualified on pole with a pretty good time for us and then got the three wins,” Osborne said.
“Hard fought with John Baxter who finished second, and then Chris Molle finished third, they were pretty much on me the whole weekend. So while it wasn’t easy, it’s good to get the three wins.”
Osborne has been racing HQs since 2012 and shared that a lot of people are surprised that there is still a competition after they wrapped up supporting Supercars in the 90’s.
“They don’t do anything right for a race car – they don’t turn, they don’t stop, they don’t go but I’d say they’re an art to drive them fast and it’s definitely a lot of fun,” he told The Hunter River Times with a laugh.
The following weekend Osborn downsized to an Aussie Race Car to compete at the Thrifty Newcastle 500.
After not qualifying well the weekend just didn’t improve, and then it was brought to a dramatic end when the Muswellbrook driver was involved in a big incident in the final race of the weekend.
“I came around a blind corner, turn seven, and there was two cars in the fence and another car in the middle of the road that had already collected one of them, nowhere to go, and bang, went in and cleaned him up pretty big and then behind us there must have been another I don’t know for sure 5, 6, 7 more cars, that piled in after that,” Osborn explained.
Thankfully all drivers involved walked, albeit tentatively in some cases, away from the accident despite at least one of the cars being a write off due to chassis damage.
