Tenders for the demolition of the dome roof over Singleton’s 25m heated indoor pool close on April 9.

The tender process was expedited at the request of Singleton councillors at its March meeting after they were presented with a report officially informing them the dome had come to the end of its life and the pool could not be used until it was demolished.

A packed public gallery collectively gasped as councillors were told staff knew the dome was compromised as far back as 2018, angry that nothing had been done to replace the structure that now leaves swimming squad members, Singleton Swimming Club and the community who use the pool daily for exercise with nowhere to go once the outdoor pool closes mid-April.

Councillors approved the immediate demolition of the dome at the March meeting and were told the tender and demolition process was anticipated to take ten weeks.

The demolition of the dome was estimated to take between two and three weeks.

At its April 21 meeting, council will consider options including potentially heating the outdoor 50 metre pool with further decisions to be made about the future cover over the 25 metre indoor pool.

While pleased the 25 metre pool will remain into the future and not close permanently, the fact that there is no pool access has left those in the swimming community devastated.
