Happy Birthday Neil Mac

Singleton legend, Neil McNamara, (pictured) celebrated a sprightly 97 years young last week.

Mr McNamara was Mayor of Singleton for a massive 29 years, probably the longest continually serving mayor anywhere in the country.

He now lives at the Mercy with his wife, Joan, and over the past week, hehas been busy receiving phone calls and visitors to mark the special occasion.

Mrs McNamara said the staff at the Mercy made a fuss of her husband, balloons with 97 on them decorated the home and all enjoyed a birthday cake.

“Wait till he is 100,” she laughed.

Mr McNamara said he attended the opening of the Mercy back in 1983 and he never imagined he would end up calling the Mercy home.

Nor did he imagine he would celebrate his 97th birthday.
“We are happy, we are very well looked after and life is good,” he said.
