The Dare to be Deadly Youth Day Camp is offering local youth an amazing opportunity to learn about the indigenous heritage of the Upper Hunter.

“We want to get the kids back on country, closer to nature and learning culture,” Kemer Edwards from the Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Lands Council said.

“We have come up with the idea of holding a day at the Minimbah Teaching Place out at Bulga, and we’re going to hold a series of workshops there.”

Throughout the day small groups of participants will practice weaving, cultural dance, and make tools as well as learn Aboriginal symbols, art and language.

“We’re also trying to incorporate food prep into that, teaching the kids to prep cultural food,” Kemer said.

“At the end of the day, the idea is that all the kids sit down together and have their meal together.

“And we want them to be able to tell us something they’ve learned and we hope that they take something away.”

The day is a joint project between Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Lands Council, Arts Upper Hunter’s Blak Arts Collective, and the Australian Government Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support.

It will take place on Friday April 17, with buses running from Merriwa, Scone, Muswellbrook and Singleton to the Bulga site for a full day of cultural immersion.

Bookings are essential for the free event aimed at youth from 11 years old, for more information or to book, call the Lands Council on 6543 1288.
